Getting Extra Loft Insulation

More loft insulation came as part of the “green deal” with the new boiler.  I had to remove everything from the loft, but there wasn’t much in there as I haven’t lived in this house very long.  What worried me was the boarding, as it was too heavy to move and I knew that it couldn’t go back on top of the new insulation as the extra is too high and squashing it means there is no point in having it.

The date was arranged, I emptied the loft, the men phoned to say their time of arrival and came when they said.  Easy!

I asked about the boards and the man asked if I wanted to keep things in the loft and when I said I did he said “no problem”.  They would leave the boards clear as they were.  The boards would provide some extra insulation anyway.

The job was done in less than an hour and as well as increasing the depth of insulation they lagged every  pipe they could see – or re-lagged them if it wasn’t very good – and put extra lagging round the water tanks.

They also left off lagging where the loft ladder goes.  They seem to have had a lot of common sense – or experience.

I was advised to leave it a few days as it was dusty up there and that would need to settle.  I did that but it is still a bit dusty and makes me cough a bit.  I have to advise any workmen e.g. electricians, working in the loft to wear face masks and gloves.

I think this is the easiest home improvement I have ever had!   Hopefully it will keep the house warmer, too and save on fuel bills.   Definitely recommended!
