A butterfly took up residence on my bedroom floor, so I had to step over it and hoover round it!
It first appeared on the curtains in my study. No idea where it came from or how it got in. The next day it appeared on my bedroom windowsill sunning itself, but by the evening it was on the floor. I offered it some sugary water, but it declined, but clung to my finger so I put it back on the windowsill. That evening it was back on the floor near my bed which made it hard to make the bed the next day when it was still there!
The next day it was back near the wardrobe. I discovered that afternoon, when I was checking on its identification, that it was upside down, so I was seeing its underside. At that stage I realised that with all my care it was dead!
I turned it back right way up. It seems to have been a small tortoiseshell.
My book says they like to hibernate in houses, so I maybe that is what it was trying to do. It obviously wasn’t very successful – it should have chosen a less obvious place where it wouldn’t get disturbed. I did try my best for it, but it didn’t survive. I still wonder how it got into the house and it must have flown from one place to another, but I never saw it flying. It is possible that it flew into the mirror on the wardrobe and so knocked itself upside down, but I will never know…… It seems to have lost one antennae too. They are quite pretty butterflies though.
