Lockdown – week 3

So here we are on week 3.  The weather was supposed to be sunny all week so I planned it as a gardening week, but it hasn’t quite turned out like that.

Monday was the day for our book group, so we had decided to do it by email.  The book was “The Secret Barrister” and two of us had finished it, one had got maybe half way through and two had only managed the first chapter!

The book!

It was a bit of a struggle to finish it, but we agreed that it was well written and set out well to show the process of how a criminal trial and the process surrounding it takes place – or is supposed to.  It did go on a bit and was terribly negative and one person found it very depressing but it was also quite informative.  Some discussion as to whether author was male or female.  Email was not totally satisfactory, but sort of worked.

Then I have spent quite a bit of time doing calligraphy – to write a birthday and several Easter cards.

Ready for calligraphy

When I run out of other things to do I must try a different script, but at the moment I am still failing to get the round-hand quite right far too often.  We were told on the course that it is very easy to get spelling wrong (well I can do that anyway!) because one is concentrating on forming the letters but it was a bit bad to spell a friend’s name wrongly on her Easter card!  After that I did a practice for everything I wrote.

I also seem to have spent a fair amount of time on the phone or delivering food or flowers or the cards to friends – which means that we do see each other – from a safe distance, usually more than 2m.  It is surprising how long phone calls take when you add it all up.  I think I have spent at least half an hour on the phone every day and some days it has been well over 2 hours – not all to the same person!

I have done some gardening, but by the end of Friday all I had done was cut the front lawn properly and done the edges and weeded the boarders.  I discovered, when weeding near it in the back garden, that my clematis armandii has a really nice smell.  I wondered why I have never noticed before but realised that usually when it flowers (February, March, early April) it is not the weather to go out and do much weeding.  It has flowered quite late this year, I think.

The clematis – a bit past its best

On Saturday I cut the back lawn and edges and also turned over the surface of the vegetable patch and added the compost I had sieved earlier.  Then on Sunday I put netting round the veg patch as a squirrel deterrent and planted out 4 beans that I had in pots and sowed some carrots and radishes.  So it did turn out more of a gardening week than I thought.

On Thursday I did eventually manage to listen to the Palm Sunday service from Church and I did the “hang-out” with our housegroup in the evening – much more organised and a good reflection from Chris and Liz.  I also managed the hang out after the service on Sunday, too.  On Friday I listened to the Good Friday Reflection on Radio 4, which was ok.  Also spent some time just reading the account of the crucifixion and thinking about it.

I also made a batch of chilli this week. I thought I had checked I had all the ingredients before I started, but when I looked for the chilli powder I only had a small amount! A rather mild batch of chilli this time…..

As I have been running out of rice I had my chilli with a baked potato and later in the week I had a curry with couscous as I had plenty of that.

So what else this week? Finished the book “Red Moon Rising” which is the story of the beginning of the 24-7 prayer movement. I had borrowed it from the church library the last time the church was open for services. How would I describe it? Challenging, maybe or thought provoking?

The book!

Can’t think that there has been anything else this week. Done more walking than skipping – which continues to get worse. Went to Tesco on one shopping expedition rather than Sainsburys. What exciting lives we lead!!

So to week 4…..
