Jubilee Weekend

A week or two before the jubilee weekend the local postbox acquired a relevant “hat” …..

….. and we put up decorations in the café/community centre on the week before the actual Jubilee .

Café decorations

On the Monday and Tuesday of the Jubilee week the café served “high tea” with sandwiches, scone with cream and jam, cakes and tea. I didn’t see that – they were all gone by the time I was there on the Wednesday! On that day we served more than 30 portions of “Crown roast” – turkey crown with all the trimmings.

On the Thursday I did an extra shift and we served “all day breakfast” and had the television on to watch the proceedings on the Mall and at Buckingham Palace.

Have your photo taken with the Queen

All that week you could have your photograph taken with the queen or play various games, such as stick the diamond on the crown. For that, one was blindfolded, turned round a few times and then, without feeling, had to try to stick the diamond onto the crown.

On the Saturday I went to a village fete and children’s fun day with a friend. Walking down to it quite a lot of houses had bunting – some knitted! The most interesting I saw was…..

…these red, white and blue fluffy balls.

We had a go at a few things including failing to throw balls into containers, guessing the number of sweets in the jar but decided the coconut shy was too hard!

Stall for the duck race

We did have a go at the duck race though. Well, we paid for our ducks and assumed they were entered but had gone before we could see them lose. We also bought hot dogs to eat. There was a band playing to get everyone in the mood.

We actually ate our hot dogs sitting on straw bales while we waited for the dog show – of which we again only saw a part. We left before “the dog with the waggiest tail” and “the dog the judge would most like to take home”. It was quite fun and the same dogs kept appearing in different classes.

Entrance to the green

We walked back so we could join the “street party” on the green where my friend lives. People had prepared food and we took our chairs and joined in. The food was pleasant, if there were rather a lot carbohydrates but the cups of tea were certainly very welcome.

On the Sunday we had a special service in the church – which had also been decorated.

The “stand” had been moved so that everyone could have their photos taken with the queen!

So? Well it was quite a good weekend and by no means as bad as I feared it might be! The weather was mostly good, too, which helped.
